Switzerland vs. Argentina - Post-Event Review

2026 World Cup, Quarter-final (QF1, Match #100) | Sat Jul 11, 2026 | GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, MO (OPEN-AIR, roof N/A)

⛔ PRE-MATCH DNF — pipeline did not complete (environment clock fault in lineup poll) | No prediction produced | Calibration: N/A

TL;DR

Result: Argentina 3-1 Switzerland (AET — 1-1 at 90'; Mac Allister 10' via Messi assist, Ndoye 67', Álvarez 112', Lautaro Martínez 120'+1'). Argentina defend deep into extra time, break a stubborn Swiss block twice in the final 10 minutes. ARG advance to SF2 vs Spain.

Calibration Breakdown: ⛔ N/A — pre-match pipeline DNF. No modal winner, no modal scoreline, no #1 scorer pick were ever published. Categories 1–3 cannot be scored. This review is a result capture + 12-category checklist + framework-consistency learnings only (blind-match format, per the UZB-COL precedent).

⚠️ Pipeline Fault — DNF

The pre-match pipeline did not complete. Sequence of failure:

  1. Gathering layer (match-scout / injury-sweeper / referee-profiler) completed normally — all briefs archived.
  2. Referee assignment confirmed via FIFA Match Centre API (João Pinheiro, POR) at staging.
  3. Lineup-checker polling loop failed — an environment clock fault killed the tools/lineup-check.mjs watch loop at T-62 (01:58 CEST). ESPN API never returned rosters during the live poll window.
  4. Confirmed lineups ultimately dropped at 10:36 CEST — ~7h 36m after kickoff. By then the writers could not stage; the kickoff window had passed.
  5. No match-writer / match-writer-g4 / match-writer-g5 analyses were produced. No {code}-2026-consensus-ensemble.md exists.

This is a pipeline fault, not an analytical miss. The 12-category checklist below is therefore a result capture against documented framework patterns (what the inputs + doc-1/doc-5 Findings imply), not a calibration of a published prediction. Do not read the "✅/⚠️" marks below as model accuracy — there was no model. They mark consistency with the framework the writers would have applied.

1–5. Summary

6. Match Stats (FINAL)

⚠️ The post-event brief referenced "ESPN boxscore attached" but the quantitative boxscore (possession, xG, shots, SoT, card counts) was NOT captured in the scout's brief. Per the no-fabrication rule, unknown cells are marked as such rather than invented. The lead should backfill these from ESPN/Opta before the next pipeline run.

Stat Switzerland Argentina
Possession (not in brief) (not in brief; "dominant in ET" qualitatively)
xG (not in brief) (not in brief)
Shots (not in brief) (not in brief)
SoT (not in brief) (not in brief)
Yellows (not in brief) (not in brief)
Reds 0 (no red reported) 0 (no red reported)
Pens 0 0 (no pen scorer; pen-averse ref profile held)

Confirmed qualitative: ARG "dominant in ET"; Kobel held firm through regulation, conceded 2 in ET. SUI's only goal was a counter (Ndoye via Rodríguez). 0 penalties in the match — consistent with the pen-averse referee profile.

7. Key Learnings

Since no prediction was published, these are framework-consistency validations / refinements drawn from the result vs the documented Findings in doc-1 + the R32/R16 refinements. They feed back into doc-1 and predictions-summary.md for the lead to apply to SF2 (ARG vs ESP) and beyond.

  1. Finding 13 (sterile-domination draw band) validated AGAIN at QF — the 1-1 at 90' is textbook. fav_share ~0.68 favorite (ARG) vs a low-block + confirmed-form hot-GK (Kobel) → draw band of ~25–30% was the correct #2 at 90'. The 2014 R16 echo (0-0 to 117') now has a QF companion (1-1 to 90'). Action: for SF2 (ARG vs ESP, two elite sides, both capable of low-block phases), keep the draw band ≥25% at 90' — do NOT collapse it into a single advance-probability blob per §7K.

  2. R32-5f (hot-GK fades in ET without the block) — strongest validation yet. Kobel conceded 1 in 90', 2 in ET (Álvarez 112', Lautaro 120'+1'). The block held through regulation and cracked as it fatigued past ~105'; the GK, stripped of his structural shield, could no longer keep the clean sheet. Refinement: the confirmed-form-hot-GK ×0.5–0.6 credit is a 90-minute credit, not a 120-minute one. In ET, revert the hot-GK discount toward baseline (the block is the system; without it, the GK is mortal). Weight ET-goal probability UP for any match that reaches level-at-90' with a defending block.

  3. PROPOSED: KO-ET sub-impact ≠ tournament sub-rate (the SUI/ARG inversion). Pre-match bench data favored SUI decisively (13.3% tour-leading sub-scoring rate vs ARG's 5.0%, lowest among contenders). The result inverted this completely: ARG's bench scored twice to win the tie; SUI's deep bench (Manzambi 3 sub-goals, Vargas, Amdouni, Itten) scored zero. Refinement: bench-impact modeling should separate group-stage rate (defensive rotations, dead rubbers) from KO-ET chasing rate. In ET of a knockout, an elite-side bench attacker chasing a winner (Lautaro, Álvarez) overrides the low tournament rate; a mid-tier side's high tournament rate (built vs weaker group defenses) does not transfer. Proposed new factor: weight bench quality (squad-value tier of the sub) over historical sub-scoring rate for KO-ET scenarios.

  4. R32-5g milestone boundary refined: record-CHASING → goals; record-HELD → playmaker. Messi's 7/7 KO scoring run (through R16, where he set the all-time WC record at 20) did NOT extend to this QF — he assisted (Mac Allister 10') rather than scored. The milestone→goals rule applies to the match where the record is being SET. Once held, the motivation shifts from individual milestone to team-win → creator mode. Refinement to R32-5g: "record-chasing → goals; farewell → minutes" gains a third state: "record-held → playmaker (assist, not goal)." For SF2, Messi is in playmaker mode — weight his assist probability, not his goal probability.

  5. PROCESS: late FIFA referee reassignment is a real input-error source — re-verify at post-event, don't trust the pre-match API as final. Pre-match, the FIFA Match Centre API (MatchId 400021537, retrieved kickoff-day) returned João Pinheiro (POR) as the lead referee, with his crew. The post-event scout's brief flags Raphael Claus / Wagner Ribeiro as the actual officials ("per scout — verify" — carried forward unconfirmed). If confirmed, this is a late FIFA reassignment. Process rule: the referee-profiler's pre-match assignment must be treated as provisional; the post-event scout MUST state the actual referee and flag any divergence. The Pinheiro profile (pen-averse, 2-3Y/0R/0pens projected) cannot be credited/debited until the actual referee is confirmed. (Note: 0 pens in the result is consistent with BOTH Pinheiro's pen-averse profile and a Claus assignment — it does not resolve the discrepancy.)

  6. PROCESS: the lineup-checker polling loop needs fault tolerance — a single clock fault killed the entire downstream pipeline for a QF. The environment clock fault during the T-60→T-30 watch loop left the pipeline with no confirmed XI, and (because writers stage on lineups.md) no writer could run. For a QF this is high-stakes. Proposed safeguards: (a) writers should be able to stage on the last-confirmed XI (here, the R16 projection) with a ⚠️ projected XI — ESPN not dropped flag, rather than hard-blocking; (b) the lineup-check watch loop should catch a clock/exit fault and fall back to a system-poll retry; (c) for knockouts, the R16 XI is a strong prior (low rotation) — treat its absence as a warning, not a blocker. The integrity win from the failure: both #1 GKs (Kobel, Dibu Martínez) were correctly locked — the single most model-breaking variable was preserved even though the pipeline DNF'd.

8. Knockout Bracket — QF1 result

QF Match Result Advance
QF1 Switzerland vs Argentina ARG 3-1 AET (1-1 at 90') 🇦🇷 Argentina → SF2 vs Spain
QF (context) ESP vs BEL ESP 2-1 (Fabián Ruiz 30', De Ketelaere 41', Merino 88') 🇪🇸 Spain → SF2

SF2 (provisional): Spain vs Argentina — two Tier-1 sides, both with generational playmakers (Messi / Yamal-era core). Per Learning 1, the draw band at 90' must be kept ≥25% (two elite sides, both capable of low-block phases). Messi enters in playmaker mode (Learning 4). ARG bench depth (Álvarez, Lautaro) is now a validated KO-ET weapon (Learning 3).

(Remaining SF/QF slots not in scope for this review — no fabrication of unplayed results.)

Post-event for SUI-vs-ARG (QF1, Match #100). ⛔ PRE-MATCH DNF — pipeline did not complete (environment clock fault in lineup-checker polling loop; lineups dropped 10:36 CEST, ~7.5h post-kickoff). No writer analyses or consensus prediction were produced; categories 1–3 (winner/scoreline/who-scores) are NOT scored (blind-match format, per UZB-COL precedent). Result + scorers confirmed from the scout's post-event brief (sources/matches/sui-vs-arg/post-event/00-post-event-brief.md). FINAL stats only. ⚠️ Quantitative boxscore (possession/xG/shots/SoT/cards) NOT captured in brief — marked unknown, NOT fabricated (lead to backfill). ⚠️ Referee discrepancy: pre-match profiled João Pinheiro (POR, FIFA API); post-event scout flags Raphael Claus / Wagner Ribeiro "(per scout — verify)" — UNCONFIRMED, carried forward. Sources: sources/matches/sui-vs-arg/ (scout + team-news-sui + team-news-arg + referee + lineups + post-event).
