Portugal vs. DR Congo - Post-Event Review
2026 World Cup, Group K, Match 18 | June 17, 2026 | NRG Stadium, Houston, TX
Predicted vs. Actual | Calibration: ~50%
TL;DR
Result: Portugal 1-1 DR Congo (HT 1-1). The DRAW hit (consensus 21%), not the favorite (69%). DR Congo's low block (5-3-2) + a capable Mpasi GK + AFCON pedigree produced exactly the Finding 11 draw pattern the consensus underpriced. Worse: DRC had the better xG (0.82 vs 0.64) and arguably deserved all three points. Two headline predictions failed — (1) Al-Jassim's "highest-ROI gathering signal" produced ZERO penalties despite a 0.40-0.45/game career rate, and (2) Ronaldo (unanimous #1 scorer, ~29%) extended his major-tournament drought to 10 games goalless. g4's outlier bull case (78% POR, Ronaldo 38%) was badly wrong on both axes.
- Winner: ❌ DRAW — predicted POR 69% / Draw 21% / DRC 10%. The 21% hit; the favorite did not.
- Scoreline: ⚠️ 1-1 (partial) — modal was POR 2-0 (~19%); 1-1 was a respected secondary across all 3 models (mm3 12% #3, g5 12% #4, consensus ~8%), but not the pick.
- Who Scores: ⚠️ split — POR #1 Ronaldo (~29%) ❌ (0 goals, full 90). DRC #1 Wissa (~11%) ✅ (scored, historic — DRC's first-ever WC goal). João Neves (POR) was a lower-tier pick, not top-3.
- Penalty: ❌ NONE — Al-Jassim's 0.40-0.45 pen rate was flagged as the match's biggest signal (predicted 30-40% pen chance). It produced zero spot-kicks. Highest-ROI gathering signal ≠ deterministic outcome.
- Tomás Araújo (Watch variable): ✅ HELD UP — 7.3 FotMob, no open-play goals conceded in his channel. Dias's absence was NOT exploited. The flagged risk resolved in Portugal's favor.
- Roof CLOSED / climate neutral: ✅ VALIDATED — Houston flood watch outdoors, indoor conditions climate-controlled. Finding 11 weather variables neutralized as predicted.
- GK: ✅ both confirmed — Diogo Costa (POR) + Mpasi-Nzau (DRC) started as predicted. No model-breaking GK change.
- Finding 12: ✅ logic right, outcome wrong — Portugal did NOT conserve (Ronaldo played full 90, Martínez made attacking subs). "No conservation → comfortable POR win" broke because Ronaldo was ineffectual and DRC's block held.
- Referee leniency: ⚠️ mixed — 4 yellows total (slightly MORE active than the 20-25% tournament discount implies), but 0 pens and a possible red-card escape for Araújo (90+2') = net lenient on game-deciding decisions.
1. The Result vs. The Prediction
| Consensus | mm3 | g4 | g5 | ACTUAL | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Portugal win % | 69% | 62% | 78% | 66% | — (drew) |
| Draw % | 21% | 25% | 7% | 24% | ✅ HIT |
| DR Congo win % | 10% | 12% | 15% | 10% | — |
| Top scoreline | POR 2-0 (19%) | POR 2-1 (16%) | POR 2-0 (28%) | POR 2-0 (16%) | 1-1 |
| #1 scorer | Ronaldo (~29%) | Ronaldo | Ronaldo (38%) | Ronaldo | Neves (POR) / Wissa (DRC) |
The honest read: the models respected the draw (mm3 25%, g5 24%) but the headline consensus overweighted Portugal. g4 was the clear outlier on both favorite margin AND scorer — its 78% / Ronaldo-38% was the worst-calibrated version by a distance. mm3 and g5 were directionally honest (draw ~25%, 1-1 in the top 4) but still picked the wrong winner.
2. Winner Prediction — ❌
The favorite lost this prediction. Portugal were 75% possession, 724 passes at 92% accuracy — and mustered 1 shot on target all night. That is sterile domination. DRC's back five (Mbemba-Tuanzebe-Kapuadi-Wan-Bissaka-Masuaku) absorbed everything; the only Portuguese goal came from a 6th-minute João Neves header (Pedro Neto assist) before the block fully set.
The winner miss is a textbook draw-epidemic validation (Finding 1/11): when the underdog has (a) a low block, (b) a capable-but-not-elite GK, and (c) genuine continental pedigree, the draw floor is ~20-25%, not the naive ~10-14%. DRC checked all three boxes and the 21% consensus draw was, if anything, slightly underpriced given DRC's xG edge.
3. Scoreline — ⚠️ Partial (1-1 respected, not picked)
1-1 Draw appeared in every model's top 4-5:
- mm3: 1-1 Draw 12% (#3)
- g5: 1-1 Draw 12% (#4), 0-0 Draw 9% (#5)
- g4: 1-1 Draw 7% (#4) — g4 under-respected it, consistent with its favorite-bull pattern
- Consensus: ~8% (flagged as "low block holds + Dias OUT exploited")
So 1-1 was live in the models but never the modal pick — POR 2-0 was. Partial credit: the mechanism (low block + counter) was correctly identified, just not weighted as the headline.
4. Who Scores — ⚠️ Split (DRC ✅, POR ❌)
| Team | Predicted #1 | Actual scorer | Hit? |
|---|---|---|---|
| POR | Ronaldo (~29%); Bruno/Vitinha secondary | João Neves (6', header) | ❌ Neves was a lower-tier pick, not top-3 |
| DRC | Bakambu/Wissa (~11%) | Yoane Wissa (45+5', header) | ✅ Wissa was the flagged counter threat |
The Ronaldo miss is the story. He played the full 90 (milestone motivation confirmed — 6th WC, matched Messi, oldest outfield WC starter at 41y 132d) but extended his major-tournament goal drought to 10 games — a career worst. He had two wide sitters; Bruno Fernandes was visibly frustrated at 69'/74' when CR7 shot instead of passing. The "milestone motivation → goal" assumption was wrong: motivation got him on the pitch for 90 minutes, but age-41 decline means motivation no longer converts to finishing. Calibration: milestone motivation predicts MINUTES, not GOALS for a 41-year-old.
Wissa's goal was DRC's first-ever World Cup goal (their 32nd WC shot, ending a 52-year wait since 1974 Zaire). He was correctly flagged as the DRC counter threat pre-match.
5. Weather (Finding 11) — ✅ VALIDATED
- Outdoor Houston: flood watch, tropical system on the upper TX Gulf Coast, 2-4" rain possible.
- Match conditions (NRG roof CLOSED + AC): climate-controlled, ~70°F indoor.
- Forecast accuracy: ✅ exact — the pre-match brief correctly identified roof-closed and neutralized the Houston heat thesis.
- Impact on match: NIL. Finding 11 weather penalty correctly neutralized.
This is a clean validation: the outdoor climate was severe (the pre-match "what if the roof is open" tail risk was real) but the indoor reality made weather a non-factor, exactly as modeled.
6. Possession & xG — ⚠️ Possession right, xG INVERTED
| Stat | Portugal | DR Congo |
|---|---|---|
| Possession | 75% | 25% |
| Shots | 7 | 8 |
| Shots on target | 1 | 2 |
| xG | 0.64 | 0.82 |
| Big chances | 0 | 1 |
| Touches in opp. box | 29 | 11 |
| Passes (accuracy) | 724 (92%) | 197 (78%) |
| Corners | 5 | 4 |
| Fouls | 9 | 10 |
The xG inversion is damning for the favorite thesis. Portugal had 75% of the ball and generated 0.64 xG — DRC had 25% and generated 0.82 xG. On expected goals, DR Congo deserved to win. Bakambu hit the post (57'), Kapuadi headed wide from a long throw (63'). Portugal's only serious chance beyond the goal was a Cancelo overhead kick disallowed for offside (55', Neves off in the build-up).
Possession direction was correctly predicted (POR ~75%); the value of that possession was not. New calibration note: 75% possession + <1.0 xG = sterile domination = draw/upset signal, not control.
7. Referee, Cards & Penalties — ❌ on pens, ⚠️ on cards
- Penalties: NONE. The single highest-ROI gathering signal — Al-Jassim's 0.40-0.45 pens/game career rate, flagged for a 30-40% pen chance favoring POR's dribblers — produced zero spot-kicks. A Conceição shout at 48' was waved away; no penalty VAR review. Penalty rate is a high-variance career average, not a per-match deterministic. A 40% career rate still means 60% of matches have no pen.
- Yellows: 4 total (B. Silva 13', Mbemba 32', Semedo 88', Araújo 90+2'). Slightly MORE active than the 20-25% tournament discount would predict, but still low-event.
- Reds: 0 (but Araújo's 90+2' foul on Wissa was a red-card candidate that escaped — per WST live blog).
- Referee vs. profile: LESS decisive than predicted. No game-changing pen, a possible missed red. The pre-match "Al-Jassim will decide this match with his whistle" thesis was wrong — he was a non-factor on the scoreline.
Key learning: referee penalty rate is the right thing to gather, but it should be presented as a probability band (e.g. "30-40% chance of ≥1 pen"), not implied as near-certain. Tournament referees also regress toward leniency on game-deciding calls. Demote pen-rate from "highest-ROI signal" to "one input among several."
8. Lineup & GK — ✅ all confirmed
- GK Diogo Costa (POR) ✅ started as predicted.
- GK Mpasi-Nzau (DRC) ✅ started as predicted.
- Rúben Dias OUT → Tomás Araújo at CB ✅ — the exact flagged Watch variable. Partner was Renato Veiga (not Inácio). Araújo held up: 7.3 FotMob, no open-play goals conceded in his channel. Wissa's equalizer was a back-post set-piece header against the back three, not an Araújo exposure.
- Pedro Neto started over Rafael Leão ✅ — confirmed pre-match. Neto assisted the Neves goal; Leão came on as a sub (72').
- Wissa + Bakambu started ✅ — counter threat as modeled.
No model-breaking surprises. The lineup was the easiest part of this match to get right.
9. Substitutions — ✅ no predicted sub-scorers materialized (correctly)
| Min | Off | On | Team | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 46' | B. Silva | Conceição | POR | HT tactical (dribble for control) |
| 57' | Mukau | Sadiki | DRC | |
| 72' | Neto / Mendes (knock) | Leão / Semedo | POR | Mendes picked up a knock |
| 74' | Kayembe (inj) / Masuaku | Pickel / Kayembe Ditu | DRC | |
| 83' | Vitinha | Gonçalo Ramos | POR | chasing winner |
| 85' | Bakambu / Wan-Bissaka | Banza / Kalulu | DRC |
- Ronaldo subbed? NO — full 90. (Confirmed no-conservation, milestone motivation.)
- No sub scored. The predicted "Leão/Félix/Ramos late impact" did not produce a goal — DRC's block held to the end.
- Semedo's 88' yellow (serious foul play on Wissa) and Araújo's 90+2' yellow (held Wissa on counter, escaped red) — late DRC counter threat was live, exactly as g5's "70-90' late counter/set-piece upset risk" predicted.
10. Finding 12 (Conservation) — ✅ logic validated, outcome diverged
- Did Portugal conserve? NO. Martínez made attacking subs (Conceição HT, Leão 72', Ramos 83'), pushed for a winner, kept Ronaldo on for 90. Full-throttle, not conservation.
- Star minutes: Ronaldo 90' (no conservation despite ineffectual performance). Confirms the pre-match "milestone motivation = NO conservation" call — consistent with the ARG-ALG correction (defending-champion/milestone logic).
- Where Finding 12 logic broke: the framework says "no conservation + aggressive intent → favorite wins comfortably." Here, Portugal were aggressive AND goalless. The missing variable: aggression without finishing quality (ageing #9) + elite opponent block = aggression produces xG-sterility, not goals. Finding 12 needs a "finishing quality" modulator, not just an "intent" modulator.
11. g4 Outlier Check — ❌❌ (worst-calibrated version)
g4 was flagged pre-match as the outlier (78% POR, Ronaldo 38% scorer). Both were badly wrong:
| g4 prediction | Actual | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| POR 78% | Drew (1-1) | ❌ highest favorite margin of any version |
| Ronaldo 38% scorer | 0 goals (10-game drought) | ❌❅ way off |
| 1-1 Draw 7% | ✅ happened | g4 least respected the draw of all 3 models |
g4's known pattern holds: most bullish on favorites (+12pts over mm3/g5), runs hot on scorer #1, under-respects the draw. Its aggregate POR win% was unreliable here; its individual probabilities should be discounted. mm3 (62%, draw 25%) and g5 (66%, draw 24%) were the defensible numbers — even they were too bullish, but at least respected the draw at ~25%.
12. Key Learnings (calibration updates)
-
Draw epidemic has teeth even vs. a Tier-1 favorite. DRC (low block 5-3-2 + capable Mpasi + AFCON pedigree) drew a Portugal side with 75% possession. When the underdog checks all three Finding-11 boxes, the draw floor is ~20-25% regardless of the favorite's tier. Raise the draw band for organized-low-block underdogs facing possession favorites.
-
Referee penalty rate is high-variance, not deterministic. Al-Jassim's 0.40-0.45/game career rate produced 0 pens. A 40% rate means 60% of matches have no pen. Present pen-rate as a probability band ("~30-40% chance of ≥1 pen"), demote from "highest-ROI signal" to "one input." Tournament referees regress to leniency on game-deciding calls.
-
Milestone motivation predicts MINUTES, not GOALS (for ageing stars). Ronaldo played 90 (motivation ✅) but scored 0 (10-game drought, career worst). At 41, motivation gets a player on the pitch; it does not restore finishing. Add an age-decline discount to scorer #1 probabilities for 38+ stars, even when milestone-motivated.
-
Sterile domination = draw/upset signal. 75% possession + <1.0 xG + 1 shot on target = the favorite is not actually creating. When a possession favorite projects <1.0 xG, raise the draw/upset band. Possession % without xG is noise.
-
xG can invert vs. a low block. DRC (0.82 xG) out-created Portugal (0.64 xG) from 25% possession. Counter-attacking underdogs can win the xG battle while losing the possession battle. Model underdog xG from transition quality, not possession share.
-
Finding 12 needs a "finishing quality" modulator. Aggression + no-conservation did not produce goals because Portugal's #9 is 41 and finishing-declined. Intent without finishing = xG-sterility. Pair the conservation discount with a finishing-quality adjustment on the favorite's primary scorer.
-
g4 outlier pattern confirmed for the 8th+ time. Most bullish on favorites (+12pts), runs hot on scorer #1 (+8-12pts), under-respects the draw. Always discount g4's favorite margin and scorer #1; trust mm3/g5 on draw probability.
13. Updated Cumulative Stats (18 matches)
| Metric | Before (17, post ARG-ALG) | After POR-DRC (18) | Trend |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winner hit | 53% | ~50% (9/18) | ↓ (draw missed) |
| Exact scoreline top-3/4 | ~40% | ~39% (1-1 was top-4, not modal) | ↔ |
| Who Scores ≥1 hit | 71% | ~67% (12/18) | ↓ (Ronaldo missed; Wissa partial) |
| Referee pen prediction | — | ❌ (0 pens vs 30-40% predicted) | new miss |
| Overall | ~72% | ~68-70% | ↓ |
Draw count now: this is the latest in the draw epidemic — organized low-block underdogs continue to outperform their implied draw probability vs. possession favorites.
