Paraguay vs. Australia - Post-Event Review

2026 World Cup, Group D MD3 | 25 June 2026 | Levi's Stadium, Santa Clara (open-air, 23°C clear)

2ND-PLACE DECIDER (draw suits AUS on GD) | Predicted vs. Actual | Calibration: ~70% (band C, raw 73)

TL;DR

Result: Paraguay 0-0 Australia (HT 0-0; no goals — 5th goalless draw of WC26, first sub-1.0 xG match of the tournament at 0.83 total). The modal DRAW hit exactly — but the modal 1-1 was wrong shape: a cagey 0-0 grinder, not a trading-blows 1-1, because Almirón's suspension gutted PAR's counter (0.25 xG) and BOTH GKs (Gill 5 saves, Beach 2 saves) held clean sheets.

Calibration Breakdown: Winner 25/25 · Scoreline 20/25 · Who Scores 0/20 · Findings 18/20 · Model-breaking 10/10 · deductions 0 = 73/100 → ~70% band C

1-5. Summary

6. Match Stats (FINAL)

Stat Paraguay Australia
Possession ~44% 56%
xG (Opta) 0.25 0.58
Shots 7 12
SoT 2 5
Yellows 1 1
Reds 0 0
Pens 0 0
GK saves 5 (Gill) 2 (Beach)

0.83 total xG = lowest of any 2026 WC match (first sub-1.0). Squawka alt-feed cited 1.44 total (0.46 / 0.98) — standard provider variance; Opta figure is the cleaner match-level reference.

7. Key Learnings

  1. REFINE Finding 12 (conservation): the "must-win = 0% conservation" call can be WRONG when the star is suspended. Pre-match staked "PAR must-win → 0% conservation, will chase late." Reality: PAR conserved because Almirón was out — Alfaro chose a defensive 5-4-1, "minimal risk throughout" (BBC). Refinement: when Finding 4a (gutted) fires on a must-win team, the team is more likely to CONSERVE (protect the point it has / best-3rd math) than chase. Gutting + must-win ≠ aggression; gutting + must-win = sit-and-survive. This inverted the F12 read and should be added as a modulator to the F4a×F12 interaction.
  2. VALIDATE Finding 4a (attack gutted): the "partial gutting" band (-15pt) is the right calibration for counter-mechanism destruction (not just a single absence). Almirón is PAR's entire counter identity; without him, PAR produced 0.25 xG and their latest first shot since 1966. The -15pt "partial" call (between single -5 and full -25) is now benchmarked as correct for a counter-talisman loss. Single-absence ≠ gutting held.
  3. VALIDATE Finding 6 (low-block + hot-GK) and extend it: it fires in BOTH directions when both sides have a hot GK. The pre-match flag (Gill MD2 MOTM, Beach MD2 CS) materialized as a mutual clean sheet — 0.83 total xG, lowest of the WC. New proposed nuance (candidate Finding 6b): when BOTH keepers are in hot-GK form AND the xG ceiling is already low (gutted attack / two low blocks), the draw floor rises ~5-8pt above the standard 15-20% band — this match belonged in a 40%+ draw bucket, where g5 (40%) was exactly right and mm3/g4 (38/30) were closer.
  4. VALIDATE referee leniency discount (Finding: 20-25% tournament leniency). Turpin's career profile is 4-5+ cards; he gave 2. The 1 VAR pen shout (49' Irankunda) was dismissed. Leniency discount now confirmed across 8+ consecutive tournament matches — apply as default, not exception.
  5. PROCESS NOTE — Who Scores in a 0-0 is structurally unscorable (0/20). The rubric correctly awards 0 when no goals exist, but this penalizes a prediction that got the outcome (draw) right. No change to the rubric, but flagged for the lead: 0-0 results will always cap the ceiling at ~80% regardless of how good the macro reasoning was. This review's 73 is genuinely the right number, but note the structural ceiling.

8. Group D after MD3

Pos Team P Pts GD
1 USA 3 6 +2
2 Australia 3 4 0
3 Paraguay 3 4 ✅ (likely through as 3rd) -3
4 Turkey 3 3 ❌ (eliminated) -1

⚠️ Paraguay's R32 berth was still conditional on other third-place results at time of writing — listed as "likely through (4th-best 3rd currently)" per the scout brief; not yet mathematically confirmed in this review. All MD3 matches in Group D played 25 June 2026.
